000009505 520__ $$aThe 2018/19 U.S. ski season brought 59.3 million skier visits, 42 fatalities, and 39 catastrophic injuries. Medical response teams, termed ski patrols, are required by the US Forest Service at each ski area. A ski patrol's medical care involves unique challenges: distance from definitive care, complex extrication, and exposure to winter environments. While rules stipulate that one or more persons be trained to administer basic first aid, no further uniform regulations apply to the training, scope of practice, or medical oversight for U.S. ski patrols. This project aims to investigate patroller training, patient care, and medical direction of U.S. ski patrols through the survey of ski patrol directors and medical directors.
