However, the sun sensitivity of individuals with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick types V and VI) may be underestimated. Individuals with darker skin experience greater disparities in skin cancer burden, including higher mortality rates, due to individuals being diagnosed at later stages when the disease is more advanced and potentially deadly. Our prior work migrated a dermatologist-assigned classification system (FST-E) to a culturally-neutral self-report measure of sun sensitivity. This approach may enable better characterization of individuals? sun sensitivity and can guide tailored recommendations of sun protection behaviors that may reduce individuals' risk of skin cancer. 000009556 540__ $$fCC BY 000009556 542__ $$fIn copyright - joint owners 000009556 650__ $$aDermatology$$017631 000009556 650__ $$aMelanins$$021987 000009556 650__ $$aSkin Neoplasms$$026054 000009556 6531_ $$aculturally-neutral wording 000009556 6531_ $$afitzpatrick skin types 000009556 6531_ $$aphotosensitivity categorization 000009556 6531_ $$asun sensitivity 000009556 6531_ $$aphototype 000009556 6531_ $$aoptical density 000009556 691__ $$aOHSU-PSU School of Public Health$$041366 000009556 7001_ $$aLamkin, Medina$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000009556 7001_ $$aAlvord, T.W.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000009556 7001_ $$aSanchez, M.A.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000009556 7001_ $$aSamathan, R.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000009556 7001_ $$aMarriott, L.K.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000009556 711__ $$aResearch Week$$uOregon Health and Science University$$d2022 000009556 8564_ $$9cae46c61-7bad-4b9a-88b3-e90300e64899$$s51513$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/9556/files/Lamkin-Medina-OHSU-ResearchWeek-2022.pdf 000009556 905__ $$a/rest/prod/98/80/vr/72/9880vr72s 000009556 980__ $$aResearch Week
