Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based treatment model for OUD, whose widespread adoption could lead to a decline in OUD-associated comorbidities, infectious diseases, and reduction of trauma, suicide, and overdose deaths. The 2016 Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) took an assertive stance on the need to combat OUD and offered advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants eligibility to prescribe medications for OUD.
