000009703 520__ $$aThe social problem of agricultural labor exploitation in the United States (U.S.) has existed since before the formal inception of this country. Today, immigration and labor policy prevent agricultural workers from accessing basic labor rights and protections and undocumented workers are ineligible for entitlement programs that would improve their quality of life. September 11th terrorist attacks redirected public discourse about U.S. immigration policy and immigrants, including agricultural laborers, leading to a narrative that undocumented workers are threats to national security. This Capstone research explores how narratives shape the reproduction of agricultural labor exploitation by creating the impression that immigrant laborers are threats to the security of U.S. citizens. This research also examines how threats to immigrant workers? livelihoods and well-being have been documented by academic research.
