Public Health in Oregon: Discovering Historical Data offers previously inaccessible data in machine-readable formats for modern research. Materials can be browsed or searched via the search bar on the left, though it's not currently possible to filter only for transcribed files. However, most ledgers, reports, and surveys include transcriptions.
Since the mid-1800s, public health professionals have gathered data to understand health challenges and drive improvements. OHSU Library’s Historical Collections & Archives house a rich trove of original studies, surveys, reports, and records from the 19th and 20th centuries. Digitization of these collections makes them accessible to today’s researchers and includes early medical journals, public health surveys, records from the People's Institute and Portland Free Dispensary, Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy’s early papers, state institution records, and more.
Work on this project is supported in whole or in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Oregon State Library. For more context, visit this narrative historical exhibit.
