Description

J. Peter Bentley, Ph.D. was a researcher and professor in the Division of Experimental Biology at the University of Oregon Medical School. In this interview, he describes the efforts of Edward West and Donald Pickering in securing a suitable and affordable site for the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center. He recounts "the Pickering debacle," which led to the expulsion of Pickering and the decampment of a group of biochemistry researchers from the Center back to Marquam Hill. Dr. Bentley was very active in the formation of the first elected Faculty Council at UOMS; he describes the interactions between the schools after UOMS became the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, and the relationship between President Leonard Laster and Dean Arthur Ransom, as well as various efforts to reform the Medical School curriculum in response to ever-expanding medical knowledge. He also responds to a query about women and minority students at OHSU, and briefly discusses the, then called, Office of Minority Student Affairs.
