Abstract

The recent rise in childhood obesity has important implications for motor vehicle safety, especially given that more than 1.5 million children in the United States are involved in motor vehicle crashes each year. For children, these crashes remain the leading cause of death and disability. Expanding the limited research on pediatric injury and BMI‑for‑age may help identify needed improvements in vehicle safety systems and injury‑prevention strategies, ultimately reducing childhood injury and mortality related to motor vehicle crashes.
