Abstract

Methamphetamine (MA) use among women of child‑bearing age has increased, raising concern about prenatal MA exposure and its long‑term effects on children. Cognitive problems are documented in MA‑exposed children, but the underlying brain mechanisms remain unclear. Human studies are limited due to frequent co‑use of other substances, making rodent models essential. Developmental exposure can be modeled through gestational MA administration or by exposing pups during the first three postnatal weeks, a period similar to the human third trimester. These models help isolate MA’s impact on hippocampal development and later cognitive function.
