Abstract

When working in the electronic health record (EHR), providers can utilize a variety of tools and functions to help them write notes and complete clinical work. A function that is commonly used is copy/paste, which allows users to copy and paste sections of text or images. Providers can also use copy/forward, a function which lets a user copy an entire medical note, make edits to the note, and sign the edited note. While the use of copy/paste and related functions in the EHR is common among providers, studies have found that copy/paste can lead to increased risk and poor outcomes for patients. This scholarly project aimed to assess attitudes in a broader group of providers. Specifically, this project used a survey to assess utilization and attitudes around copy/paste and copy/forward in a single EHR system among all medical students at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
