Abstract

During the past few years a considerable amount of interest has been show in the phenomenon of self-punitive or vicious-circle behavior in both rat and human subjects. A self-punitive experiment with rats typically consists of a shock-escape training phase (avoidance training may be used) in a short straight runaway, followed by an extinction or testing phase.
