Abstract
Researchers have devoted a great deal of effort attempting to develop a complete animal analog for the human alcoholic. Such an analog would be one in which an animal voluntarily drinks alcohol and over time develops physical dependence, tolerance, drug seeking behavior and a preference for alcohol solutions under certain conditions. Although animals can be maintained on alcohol solutions when they are the sole sources of fluid, historically animals have not continued to select those solutions when alternative fluids such as water have been made available.
