Errors in the management of self medication in the home environment are not unusual. The occurrence of potentially serious medication errors can be documented by talking with patients, whether in their home, in the clinic or in the hospital. Attempts to decrease self medication errors need to be related to knowledge about the causes for such errors. this literature review reveals that some questions which need yet to be answered involve the social, economic, cultural and individual psychological influences on the problem.
