Abstract
Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) is a good thing for several reasons. It is expected that CPOE will improve patient safety by supporting clinical decision support at the point of care. It is also expected to reduce costs by reducing redundancy in documentation and ordering to obtain these effects. Poe is often deployed in a group of applications, including Electronic Medical Record and Computer Decision Support. This thesis will consider communication theories in relation to CPOE as well as describe findings related to the effects of communication process change, beyond those explained by communication theory, that are important to understand CPOE's effect on communication.
