Abstract

In 1995, the United States Pharmacopeia established the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention to address the interdisciplinary causes of medication errors and promote the safe use of medications. In particular, there is significant concern among medical professionals regarding the potential for errors arising from the use of verbal orders. Verbal orders are defined as prescriptions or medication orders communicated orally, either face-to-face, by telephone, or through other auditory devices. The objective of this project is to describe the nature of verbal orders and to gain insights into their positive and negative consequences, as well as how they have impacted individuals within the healthcare team.
