Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the magnitude of bone strain generated by orthodontic mini‑implants (OMIs) with two different thread designs. OMIs with uniform thread pitch and diameter were compared to OMIs featuring two thread pitches and diameters. Implants were inserted into a bone analog, subjected to a ramped load, and strain was measured using electronic speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI). The results showed that OMIs with larger diameters and finer‑pitch threads in the cortical bone region produced less strain in the bone immediately surrounding the implants.
