Abstract

Prescription opiate overdose is a leading cause of death among adults in the United States. If prescription opiates are the causative factor for multiple drug overdoses each year, then it would follow that naloxone needs to be distributed to both IV drug users and to prescription opiate users. However, while multiple organizations, including SAMHSA, now promote co-prescribing models (wherein naloxone is consistently prescribed with all opiates), and consider it to be best practice, there are often significant barriers to implementing this practice.
