Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study using an interpretive phenomenological approach, was to understand the lived experience of older adult female patients with a first time diagnosis of invasive breast cancer who were receiving care from a nurse navigator from time of assignment to the nurse navigator prior to the start of the first infusion therapy through completion of at least the first round of therapy. Specific aims were to: (1) describe what the care received from a nurse navigator from assignment prior to the start of infusion therapy through completion of at least the first round of infusion therapy meant in the lives of older adult female patients with a first time diagnosis of invasive breast cancer and (2) understand how the experience of receiving care from a nurse navigator has influenced the treatment trajectory for older adult female patients with breast cancer.
