Abstract

The internet is now a regular and widespread part of life in the United States. By 2012, between 78% and 81% of American adults said they used the internet. People commonly go online to find information, including health-related topics. In fact, 72% of internet users said they had searched for health information online in the past year. However, while there's a lot of health information available online, the sheer volume can make it hard to find what you’re looking for. Because of this, the Healthy People 2020 initiative (a government program aimed at improving public health) made it a goal to increase the number of people who say they can easily find health information on the internet.
