Abstract

Women in the U.S. face a 1 in 8, or a 12.4%, risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime according to a recent surveillance study conducted by the American Cancer Society, Inc. For early stage breast cancer diagnosed among these women the standard of care treatment is typically breast conserving surgery (BCS) as this only removes the tumor and the surround parenchyma rather than the other surgical option of a radical mastectomy.
