Martha Van der Vlugt, M.D., talks about her childhood in Switzerland, Illinois, and Portland and her education at Reed College and the University of Oregon Medical School where she earned her M.D. degree (1937). She recounts her years as a private practitioner in rural Oregon and her later experience as a foreign service medical officer. She settled in Washington, D.C., and worked at the federal Office of Personnel Management. She concludes the interview speaking about the issue of women in medicine.
