Description

Dr. John Moorhead is a native Canadian, whose mother was a nurse, which gave him an early interest in medicine. Educated at Queens' University Medical School. While there, he did rotations at the local emergency room, and the physicality, constant action and teamwork appealed to him greatly. Interned at a Vancouver trauma center, then an emergency medicine residency at McGill in Montreal. When he heard OHSU was starting an E.M. program he came here in 1978. Soon our residents got affiliation with local hospitals Portland Adventist and St. Vincent. Next goal was have E.M. recognized as a specialty. He tells of other advances like paramedic training and origin of the Oregon Poison Center. He later studied health policy. He became chief of the department 1991, and concentrated on making a Level 1 Trauma Center. He created the Oregon Trauma Center and new departments in the Hatfield Building and at Doernbecher Hospital.
