Kiese Laymon is a Black southern writer from Jackson, Mississippi. He founded "The Catherine Coleman Literary Arts and Justice Initiative," a program housed in the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, in order to help young people in Jackson feel more at ease reading, writing, revising, and sharing their work on their own terms and in their own communities.
