Description

Lew Hurd reflects on the history of the Emanuel Hospital, now known as Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, in Portland, from the earliest stages of planning by Swedish Lutherans to full-swing operations nearly thirty years later. Hurd describes in detail the physical spaces of the hospital - which were innovative for the time - as well as financing concerns, the ever-present needs for expanding space and services, the governance by Lutheran churches near Portland, and support by the numerous doctors and nurses providing care for the people in their community. This talk was read before the University of Oregon Medical School History Club.
