Description

In this interview, Dr. Haigwood speaks of her scientific background and work with vaccines and animal research. As a child in a military family, Dr. Haigwood grew up in Thailand and saw the impact a lack of vaccines had on the health of the community. Later, after studying microbiology, she pursued virology and a career in the pharmaceutical industry. This eventually led to her professorship in pathobiology and immunology as well as the role of director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). There, a particular focus has been working with antibodies to prevent the spread of HIV from mother to child. Though she no longer serves as the director of ONPRC, this important work continues there.
