The outpatient clinic is one of the newest developments in hospital history. Its main function is the same as that of the inpatient service, care of the sick. Yet it differs because it cares for ambulatory patients.  The early purpose of the outpatient department was to provide medicines to the destitute sick, hence the name dispensary.
