Dr. Eddie Ramirez, born in Tala, Jalisco, Mexico, moved to the U.S. at age one. His interest in dentistry began at eight when he assisted his aunt in Mexico. He grew up speaking Spanish and learned English in kindergarten. In high school, he discovered his undocumented status, which complicated his college applications. He nearly dropped out of Portland State University due to funding issues, but received support from former teachers. While completing his degree, he applied to dental schools. He became the first undocumented/DACAmented student accepted into the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Dentistry, where he received a full scholarship through the Scholars for a Healthy Oregon Initiative. Dr. Ramirez is a national leader in the American Dental Association, advocating for undocumented and diverse candidates, and he shares his inspiring story nationwide. In this interview, he shares his story with humor and grace.
