Digital photograph of a 1915 Welch Allyn ophthalmoscope and its original case. The instrument has been removed from the case and set on a gray counter. A typed provenance card can also be seen on the counter in front of the case.

First hand-held, direct illuminating ophthalmoscope produced by Welch Allyn. The instrument is housed in a black leatherette case, measuring 22.5 x 5.5 x 5 cm. The case is lined in green velvet and has a silver clasp. The manufacturers name and patent date are stamped in gold on the case lid. The ophthalmoscope itself is brass with nickel plating and black enamelling. The bottom of the handle battery unscrews to allow access to the battery connections. The instrument was donated by Harold F. Holsinger, M.D., and is in fair condition.
