Abstract

Behavior change is essential for preventing disease and managing chronic conditions, and public health nurses are well positioned to support clients in this process. This study evaluated the training, feasibility, and usefulness of brief Behavior Change Counseling (BCC), a Motivational Interviewing–based approach, in rural public health nursing practice. Twelve nurses received a one‑day BCC training workshop followed by two support calls over eight weeks. Training effectiveness was assessed through scored recorded interactions and participant interviews. Nurses found BCC helpful and compatible with their practice but noted the need for additional, context‑specific training and ongoing support. Integrating skill development into workplace routines may enhance nurses’ confidence and consistent use of BCC.
