Abstract

A large number of consumers seek health information on the Internet. The latest Harris Interactive poll on this topic found that 150 million US adults have ever gone online for health information and 50% of all US adults have done so in the last month. These healthcare information seekers are, of course, a diverse group - both in terms of their descriptive characteristics, such as demographics, medical status, and lifestyle, and how they seek and use consumer health information (CHI). While the Internet is already a well-used source for health information, one of its more appealing strengths is the potential to provide tailored information to this diverse group of healthcare information seekers. The objective of this project is to systematically review the literature on the segmentation of Internet consumer healthcare information seekers and identify variables that characterize these seekers.
