The Advancement Fund was established in the 1970's to "encourage, promote, and solicit funds for the benefit of programs of education, patient care, and public service" at UOMS. Nelson was also a member of the Advisory Council which was created to assist in the formation of the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center.
