Abstract

Adolescent contraceptive use strongly influences teen pregnancy and STD rates in the U.S., which remain higher than in other developed nations despite similar sexual debut ages. This study analyzed data from the 2006–2008 National Survey of Family Growth to assess whether formal sex education on contraception, STDs, and HIV prevention is associated with condom use at first intercourse and partner hormonal method use among males aged 15–19. Using logistic regression, we found that exposure to comprehensive sex education, compared to abstinence-only messages, was significantly associated with safer contraceptive behaviors at sexual debut.
