Abstract

There are numerous benefits of early inclusion of palliative care (PC) in patients with advanced cancer. Though many organizations support the integration of early PC alongside standard oncology care, a gap exists between the evidence based guidelines and clinical practice as patients with advanced cancer are not routinely referred to PC early after diagnosis. This was true at the OHSU outpatient community oncology clinics where the average referral rates of patients with newly diagnosed metastatic lung cancer failed to meet their target. This quality improvement project sought to improve patient referrals to PC through multiple interventions including informational interviews, a staff survey, and an educational video.
