Abstract
The VA Portland Health Care System serves more than 95,000 veterans every year across SW Washington and throughout Oregon. Of those, estimates suggest that as many as 45% of the female veteran population have been victims of military sexual trauma. It has been well-established that trauma has profound lasting effects on morbidity and mortality for these women. Implementation and use of trauma informed care principles allows for an integration of care techniques that address individual trauma, and through doing so, ensures that services are accessible and patient-centered, encouraging patient engagement and adherence.
