Abstract

Osteoporotic fragility fractures are emerging as a major public health issue and are associated with high rates of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. These types of fractures mostly impact older adult populations and can significantly diminish an individual's quality of life. The current state of the literature regarding identification and appropriate treatment of osteoporosis in the setting of fragility fracture is in a formative stage, one that raises many more questions than it answers, however a couple of trends are clear: consistently low rates of osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment in the setting of fragility fracture/s, and a consistent lack of formalized assessment/treatment protocols.
