Abstract

Fibromyalgia (FM) affects about five million people in the U.S., and massage is often used to ease symptoms. This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of myofascial release therapy (MFR) compared to Swedish massage in women with FM. Twelve participants received weekly 90-minute sessions for four weeks. Both therapies were acceptable, with MFR showing greater symptom reduction. Therapist interviews supported massage as effective, though opinions on MFR’s superiority varied. Limitations included small sample size and short duration. Findings suggest further research with randomized trials and longer follow-up is warranted to confirm benefits of MFR for FM management.
