Abstract

Ozone is an environmental component of air pollution. It is a reactive oxygen species that acutely damages airway epithelium, increasing inflammatory cytokines, and neutrophil and eosinophil recruitment to lungs. The overall hypothesis tested in this dissertation is that ozone inhalation induces eosinophil hematopoiesis in bone marrow, and that newly divided eosinophils will ameliorate airway hyperreactivity three days later in non-sensitized and sensitized animals.
