Abstract

Health professions (HP) trainees are in a unique position as they are both learning a chosen field while working within an electronic health record (EHR). EHR or documentation burden (EHR burden) affects trainees directly, although not all trainees have the same EHR access during training, as they will after completion of training. Efforts to mitigate EHR burden have been described for experienced HP, but less is understood for trainees. We performed a scoping review examining 4 databases for scholarly, peer-reviewed studies that measured trainee experience of interventions to mitigate EHR burden. We applied the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses Extensions for Scoping Review (PRISMA-ScR) guidance. We conducted a concept clarification cross-walking the corpus to the Unertl(2010)’s workflow elements model, identifying intervenable points in trainee workflow. We developed the Trainee EHR Burden Interventions Model to offer context and a foundation to studies aiming to mitigate trainee EHR burden.
