Abstract

Interest in early warning systems or scores began with the observation that catastrophic deterioration of patients in hospitals is often preceded by documented abnormalities in vital signs and other physiological parameters that can be overlooked by clinical staff. The goal is to create a platform that can accept data in various formats—such as electronic nursing documentation, laboratory data, or even simple spreadsheets. This platform will facilitate analysis across multiple dimensions, allowing questions to be answered easily, such as: Which components of the alerts, or which combinations of components, are most frequently associated with clinical deterioration? What is the longitudinal (temporal) evolution of alert frequency or adverse events? What is the relationship between interventions triggered by alerts and subsequent adverse events? Additionally, the platform will provide a convenient visual display of the data.
